In the universal aspiration to interpret the skies and represent them in institutional architecture as temples or libraries, the dome of Vueling embodies the very sky of the navigation routes that span its dense network. The dome is Vueling's sky crafted in wood.
The richness of network complexity
The dome is a wooden shell formed by the accumulation of simplified routes into geodesic curves that traverse the globe. The portion of the globe covered by Vueling's network has been mapped onto a dome with a diameter of 6 meters. The richness of the route network's complexity is such that it allows for the formation of a wooden shell with a visually striking richness, both visually and structurally feasible.
Double Curvature: Lightness and Efficiency
The double curvature of the spherical shell not only offers a precise artistic representation of the sky and the routes but also optimizes the use of wood. This architectural choice makes wood work very efficiently, significantly reducing the necessary mass and thus decreasing the ecological footprint of the dome.
Rationalization and sustainability in the Wooden Shell
The shell is rationalized into flat facets of plywood panels with folded sheet metal joints. This design not only optimizes numerical manufacturing and assembly for easy installation but also allows for the complete recovery of elements for various future assemblies, thus avoiding the traditional generation of debris in fair architecture.
A Living Representation of Routes
More than a structure, the Vueling dome is built as a living representation of its more than 300 routes and the 100 cities it serves. Each curved line drawn in the sky tells a story of connections and encounters, highlighting the very essence of travel.
